Engine failure blamed in airplane crash--KNOXVILLE (July 2, 1996)
Authorities investigate a light airplane crash about 2 p.m. Tuesday at Downtown Island Airport. One engine on the twin-engine Piper Apache failed after takeoff. Bob McConkey, a pilot examiner at Knoxville Flight Training Center, said the flight involved a certification test for Donna Epes, a Tri-County pilot studying for an instructor's license. McConkey said neither he nor Epes was injured. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate why the engine failed, said McConkey, who added: "There was no pilot error."
